The install price includes more than cylinders and nozzles: releasing control panel, cross-zoned smoke detection, abort stations, warning signage and horns, pipework, and often a room integrity (door fan) test to prove the space can hold agent concentration long enough to work.
Choosing the agent
- FM-200 (HFC-227ea) — the long-time default: compact cylinder footprint, lower install cost, fast knockdown. Watch-outs: expensive agent at recharge time, and HFCs face ongoing regulatory phase-down pressure — ask any bidder how they price agent availability ten years out.
- Fluoroketone agents (FK-5-1-12) — similar performance profile with a much lower global-warming footprint; supply and pricing have been shifting as manufacturers exit older chemistries, so get current agent pricing in writing.
- Inert gas (IG-541 and similar blends) — nitrogen/argon-based: more cylinders and floor space, higher install cost, but dirt-cheap agent, cheap recharges, and zero phase-out risk. Often the better lifetime-cost answer for larger spaces.
- CO2 — effective and inexpensive, but lethal at design concentrations; reserved for normally unoccupied spaces and handled under stricter safety rules.
The recurring costs
Clean agent systems live on the same inspection calendar as the rest of your fire protection: semiannual/annual inspections of the system and its detection (a few hundred dollars per visit for typical rooms), cylinder weight and pressure verification, and room integrity re-testing whenever walls, cable penetrations, or HVAC change. The number that surprises owners is recharge after discharge — chemical agents can cost thousands to refill, which is why abort stations, well-tuned detection, and door fan testing matter. Fold these visits into the same service agreement as your building-wide inspection schedule.
Buying it well
Special-hazard suppression is specialist work — you want a contractor who designs these systems routinely, not occasionally. Ask for the room integrity test in the base bid, the agent's current per-pound recharge price, and references on similar rooms.
